The Nursery

The Children’s Centre opened it’s doors in September 2008 after undergoing over two years of renovations.

We are registered to care for up to 49 children under 5 years of age, 16 of which can be between 2 and 3 and the capacity to care for 9 children under the age of 2 years old. We are currently surveying our user groups to explore the concept of extended hours during the week e.g. 7am to 7pm and adding some weekend hours of operation for both the Children’s Centre and the Out of School Project.

The Nursery runs from Monday to Friday (8.00am to 6.00pm). We are open 49 weeks of the year, with the nursery only closing for 2 weeks at the end of August and the Christmas holidays. There are 5 inset days each year for staff development when we are closed, as well as all statutory holidays.

We can also offer extended care for 3 and 4 year olds, and can collect and drop off children attending our neigbouring Newington Green Primary School. Places during holiday periods at Easter and in the Summer can also be offered subject to availability.

The Factory runs a number drop-in and stay & play sessions throughout the week. Children and their parents can meet in an informal environment and have access to quality resources and educational activities which are planned in conjunction with the centre’s Early Years teacher. There are specialised sessions in the week focusing on different areas, such as speech and language, babies, toddlers, parenting etc. and are supported by professionals.

Childminder’s Drop-in

We hold a regular Childminder’s drop-in where local childminders have the opportunity to bring their minded children and also to access resources and training to help and support them in their work. It also provides an opportunity for parents who may be looking for a childminder to come and meet childminders in a convenient, local setting.

Family Support and Outreach

Our family support and outreach team, which includes bi-lingual Family Support Workers from the Bengali, Somali and Turkish communities run a variety of groups and sessions throughout the year, including baby massage, parenting skills and healthy eating workshops to name a few. They also hold regular drop-in support surgeries where families can go for advice on benefits, housing, parenting and so on.

Linked Professionals

We work in partnership with a range of agencies including Public Health, Social Care, Speech and Language Therapy, and a range of local organisations, such as Job Centre Plus and Domestic Violence organisations to provide a high quality service to families living in the local area. If a parent has any concerns about their child or any aspect of their family or home life, these professionals are at hand to offer support and advice.

We have a very effective signposting system in place where we can refer families with queries or concerns which cannot be directly dealt with at the centre to the most appropriate local service for help.

Parenting support

There are regular courses and workshops that deal with all aspects of parenting, including sleep, weaning, toilet training and behaviour management. There have also been the very successful “Incredible Years” groups which have taken an in-depth look at parenting and which have helped many parents at the centre.

Parent involvement

We hold a number of parent forum meetings over the year both for the nursery and the drop-in. These allow users of the centre to discuss what they would like to see happening at the centre so that the children can get the best start in life.

Other Activities

The Factory and its cluster partner centres of New River Green and Packington hold a number of additional activities throughout the year. These have included 1st aid, Practical English and ESOL, “Little Leaps” and “Extra Boost”, welfare and benefits advice and 1 and 2-year development reviews just to name a few. See our timetable on the Islington website to see what’s going on now.
